Inside the arthouse

Episode 103: Prey for Rock & Roll

We welcome director Alex Steyermark and writers Cheri Lovedog and Robin Shushan to INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE to discuss their film PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL, which stars Gina Gershon, Drea de Matteo, Lori Petty, Sheri Cole, and Marc Blucas.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Kino-Lorber has re-released PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL in theaters.

This is story of a women’s Punk-Rock band in a 90’s LA music scene—a world that doesn’t really exist anymore. Based on the true life experiences of Cheri Lovedog, the band struggles to find success, playing gigs up and down the Sunset strip— and, when their big break comes, their lives are turned upside down.

PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL offers a gritty and powerful portrayal of an all-women’s band. Some of the issues that the story deals with were way ahead of their time. Rewatching it, we found it even more relevant than it was when it first premiered 20 years ago. It has become an LGBTQ+ touchstone and rock-and-roll cult classic. The film features Gina Gershon performing and singing all of its songs, produced by Stephen Trask and supported by an all-star female rock band. Hear how this rerelease almost didn’t happen—! How they rediscovered the lost files, and the remarkable process of getting this made.

Join Greg Laemmle and Raphael Sbarge, this week on INSIDE THE ARTHOUSE for a conversation with Alex Steyermark, Cheri Lovedog, and Robin Shushan!

Paradise is Burning
The fist-pumping PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL stars the electrifying Gina Gershon as Jacki, a rocker who worries that she may never make it big. Along with bandmates played by Drea de Matteo (THE SOPRANOS), Lori Petty (A LEAGUE OF THEIR OWN), and Shelly Cole (GILMORE GIRLS), she has spent years of struggle playing gigs up and down the Sunset Strip. But when that break finally arrives, their lives are turned upside down. The feature directing debut of veteran music supervisor Alex Steyermark, and based on Cheri Lovedog’s autobiographical play, PREY FOR ROCK & ROLL, is a powerfully authentic portrayal of DIY rock bands, with Gershon singing all the film’s songs herself (produced by Stephen Trask of Hedwig and the Angry Inch fame and backed by an all-star band of women alt-rockers). A film ahead of its time, it has established itself as an LGBTQ+ touchstone and a rock and roll cult classic.

PREY FOR ORCK* ROLL is now playing in select theaters.
